Would Andy Devine be a possibility?  We know he had a .410-bore Parker Bros. from the Woodcock episode on the old American Sportsman TV show.  Andy also rode and shot at Grand Junction for the Field Trials for many years.

Alex Kerr, in his white Rolls-Royce, was still showing up at Skeet shoots in the LA area when I was in the Navy in San Diego in 1971-3.

Anybody discover the prices realized for the A-1 Specials from the Little John Auction?     .....The car guys are going insane at Barrett Jackson, and the prices realized are publicized like crazy- the gun guys are so low key it's a secret!  (this may be a good thing)  What do y'all think?

Andy Devine shot some NSSA skeet back when, but I don't know whether the fantastic guns in the auction fit his style.  Recently, some gun represented as the property of Andy's brother was offered on one of the gun sites.  The provenance seemed a bit weak.  Researcher, does anyone have a copy of the AS Devine episode available for copying?  "Wait for me, Wild Bill!"  By the way, another NSSA skeet shooting champion, Harry W. Wright, appeared regularly at local shoots in a white Rolls Royce Corniche, top down, until the 90's.  That would be our 90's and his 90's.  I'm sure skeet greats Dave Noreen and Bill Murphy will do the same in the future.  I am holding tight to my fruit jar collection, waiting for prices to peak.

I spent quite a bit of time in the Andy Devine wing of the museum at Kingman, Arizona, before the Las Vegas show in January 2003.  They had a lot of pictures and memorabilia of Andy at Grand Junction, but nothing on the old American Sportsman episode.   160frame and I have discussed it many times.  It seems to be buried deep enoungh at ABC that us mortals will never see it again.  It likely aired 20 years before I owned a VCR!

Ok, guys- so let me get this straight.  2 A-1 Special Parker small bore guns sell at a major firearms auction house.  Both late Remington guns in highly desireable configurations, both 2 barrel sets with vent ribs- straight out of the woodwork- and there's not one person in the club that knows what the selling price was?  Can that be the case?  It's mind boggling to me...

Josh- I'm with you!  AMAZING....   However , equally amazing is the auction house's apparent reluctance to issue information.....    The car guys have investments that are just flying, and the prices are very much public...  We (as PGCA members) are apparently discouraged from trading (to some degree) by a long standing policy that  I find rather odd....   P.S.  I've been with this Parker thing a while and was a very early member of PGCA (1991-92)    ...I was also a minor contributor to The Parker Story...    pg.334 AAHE 1906   I'm baffled!  These folks are an interesting bunch....

Wait a minute now.  I posted recently about how difficult I found the Littlejohn site to navigate when trying to purchase catalogs, old and new, and research prices.  I think some of you guys rushed to their defense.  What is the real truth?  Someone show me, on their website, where I can purchase or research the availability of old catalogs or prices.  It is a miserable website compared to, for instance, Devines or Julias.

Bill,

I have the catalogs from the Stack auction. I am not interested in selling them, but if I can provide you with any information, I will be happy to.

Thanks, Charlie.  I appreciate the offer.  I grew up in NSSA skeet with some guys that are older than Stack and are All Americans so I will buy the catalog when I get the chance.  Kevin and I bought vests in the auction but missed out on the guns.  Thanks again.

Speaking of A1 specials... would anyone care to venture a guesstimate on the value of an A1 Special, 32" sfe, ejectors, pistol grip, skeleton butt, 80% blue 10% case?

Took another and slower run thru Little John's lot descriptions.  On Lot # 108, a pre WW2 Purdey 12, this additional clue was provided:  "Gun shows a gold inlaid "C" on top of rib which is the original owner's initial  . . . first purchased by a Beverly Hills businessman and connoisseur."  This gun had a 14 1/4" LOP.

There is another Little John website that constitutes a kind of flyer for these early January auctions ( and which does include receiver area  photos of the two A-1s ) which states the following:  "50 great single and double barrel shotguns purchased by a true connoisseur from 1930 (to) 1950."   I counted 18 of the 1500-odd lots that contained the Beverly Hills businessman description.  Perhaps the other 32 were more mundane (like the kind I normally buy) and not expressly flagged.

Several of the guns including some of the Purdeys were fitted with Miller single selective triggers - Including the previously mentioned Purdey 12.

So I thought of Cooper, even though his name had been listed as a peer of the original owner in one of the other descriptions.   Deception?  I don't know.  Cooper was making 150k per film between 1938-1950, per his bio.

Cooper died in 1961, and it is more that possible that his estate was settled long ago and these aren't his guns.  I don't track this stuff.  I am just am speculating and need enlightenment.

There were three rifles included in the 18 identified guns - a Remington 30S, a Winchester 54 and a Winchester 70, all fitted with either Noske or Zeiss glass.

Oh yeah.  One final tidbit was that on one of the guns there was a plaque placed on the stock's left side, with the original owners name inscribed.  Now, what kind of shooter has a plaque placed on the stock's left side?  Gonna get my old Sgt. York out again and look . . .

The auction information is still accessible under "cached".

Addendum:  Cooper seems a right hander, so the search continues.

Oh, Eightbore, you are so cold . . . . .

Fred, yeah, he and Kerr were M21 fans . . .

--------------------------------------------

Actually, Hemingway and Cooper shot ducks together, that Cooper would prepare. Cooper a had recipe that involved bacon strips . . .  (You can see the high order of special knowledge that I've gotten into. )  Shucks, did you know that when Cooper did the Lou Gehrig biography, they reversed the film to make him appear as if he was batting from the left side of the plate . . . . .   Did you know that Cooper made 421k in 1940?

Did you know that Cary Grant had a shotgun (not identified) with the initial "G" on the grip cap?

OK.  Names starting with "C" that I've at least looked at a little are Crosby, Lou Costello ( yes, his name starts with a "C"), Chaplin, Cliff, Curtis, Cagney (who wrote and admired poetry), and a couple I can't spell.   Even now . . . .

C'mon, you guys, this man put Millers on high order shotguns.  This man was active in shooting.  This man ordered three Purdeys at a drop.  This man placed bought Parkers with serial numbers close to those of Gable, and other notables.  This man was a "business man" who lived in Beverly Hills - - this man's gotta be connected to the film industry.  This man had an Iver Johnson 410 Skeeter with a stock that reflected several stock shortening and lengthening episodes.  This man was probably left-handed.

And, oh yes, not to leave David out, did you know that Richard Anderson, would often show up for a shoot driving his white Bentley?

When Little John publishes its next catalog, it will be interesting to see if anymore of the business man's guns show up.  Until then, what about some more "C"s?

Wonder if our Ivory Bead friends have any beads on this matter?
