Jack, ... From what I understand, Parker made a quite a few guns with 40 inch barrels. I know of several 40 inch Parker 8 gauges and I would guess that Parker made 10, 12, and 16 gauge guns with 40 inch barreles as well ... I'm sure that Austin Hogan or some other PGCA member can tell us how many guns Parker actually made with 40 inch or longer barrels.

                                                Best regards,

There's a picture of a 40" DH ten gauge being held by Charles E. Greene IV on a turkey hunt on page 1027, Vol. II of The Parker Story.

So, we can confirm 40"  barrels.

Are there any known examples or records of Parker barrels beyond 40"?

Jack

According to the archive there are 45 12 ga guns with 40 inch barrels; 1 16 ga; 14  10 ga and 12 8 ga. There are also one each 46 inch and 50 inch.

No barrrels more than 38 inches are archived after 180000.

Best, Austin

Speaking of long barrels, I just got my relatively stubby set of 36" GH D2 barrels back for Brileys. They did a wonderful job of cleaning up the bores with a .010 backbore, The barrels retain their 2 7/8" chambers and .046 chokes. Its been a week for long barrels. I turned down 34" DHE and my buddy is working on another one that turned up.

BTW, Jim, my employers, Unisys Corporation owns the Sperry and Univac names and I started my job here as a lawyer in Blue Bell, PA at Sperry Univac world headquarters

Don, do you happen to know the origin of the name Univac?  Did your company buy the rights to that name from someone else?

Best, Austin

MANY years ago, when ducks darkened the sky and the PGCA was not yet in the zygotic stage, Clark Bros. Gunshop in Warrenton VA offered an incredibly well-used but not abused 12 ga. DHE with 40" barrels.  Urban legend thereabouts had that the gun was owned and used for waterfowl by none other than Walter Chrysler (Nash Buckingham, eat your heart out!).  The gun sat in their rack for almost a year, then disappeared.  I have no idea who took it away, but other than the 40" barrels, there is one unmistakeable characteristic about it - midway between the CPG and the SKBP, there was a perfectly round half-sphere of wood about 1" in diameter and about 3/8" deep gouged out of the stock, as if someone had used a melon ball scooper to remove it.  Ever after, all of us soon-to-be Parkerphiles referred to the gun as "The Melon Ball Gun."  In true Neanderthal fashion, none of us wrote the serial number down.  Duh.

A Parker collector in Toledo told me one evening while shooting trap with him that he had the only 16 GA 40 inch Parker. Richard Bohl was the gentleman and he passed away 5/6 years ago. I understand his son inherited his Parker collection (many upper grades) BTW he was not a big bs'er.

Now unfortunately all you long barrel fans I do not know his son.

Their business is Bohl Equipment, Laskey Road, Toledo, Ohio

Roger Coger

BTW Dick Bohl was a PGCA member and did attend some of the business meeting/Ohio GCA shows in Cleveland. Kevin at one of the shows if I remember correctly, he was set up near you with 8 maybe 10 Parkers.

Now, here's  a coincidence for you.  Several years ago, I bought The Parker Story on Ebay from a Bohl Equipment Co in Toledo, Oh.  I remember the name for several reasons.  When the auction was over and I had won the books for $132.00 including shipping,  I got  to talk to the seller on the phone.  I don't recall his name.  It was a young fella said he was handling selling these books for his boss who's father had passed recently.

I do have it.  I never thought of that, Dean.  I should probably send it back to the son.  Frankly, with the address above I think I still will.

Dave:  That's a kind thing to do.  I would be curious to know

1:  do they want it
2: do they still have the collection

If yes/yes then that is nice.

If no/no then it is  maybe a reminder that a collector is in the game on their own

Also, if no/no then another small indicator to suggest that shooting what you have and enjoying them in every dimension of enjoyment they can offer is a reasonable thing to do.

Maybe I overstate.  I am nonetheless curious.

Cheers,
Jack

Of course, I don't think it would be morally wrong to make a copy for yourself ;)
