It has been my experience that if the forend is very tight you can break a chip of wood from the tip... I’ve done it.
I sell the tools Rick refers to. Shoot me a PM and we’ll trade mailing addresses etc. .

A blunt plastic letter opener or "bone folder" as used in leather working works great and in the same manner.

Kevin is right but be careful which 'tool' you use. Some can mar the barrel blue or the underside of the forend wood.
