Default 14 ga roll crimper??

I bought an antique 16 ga roll crimper off of ebay a month or so ago. I haven't been really happy with its performance. It bells out the end of the hulls making them difficult to load into the chamber. A couple of weeks ago I purchased a 20 ga roll crimper and have been really pleased. Nice, tapered ends. In the 20 ga loader the 20 ga hull is very snug in the ring you slide the hull through. In the 16 loader a 16 hull is very loose. A 12ga hull will fit through the ring of the "16ga" loader, but won't enter the brass crimping part (sorry about the terminology). The loader has no markings on it.

Is it possible I have a 14 ga roll crimper? I read somewhere on-line that 14ga shells were available into the 1920's and the last gun was probably made prior to WWI.

the loader came from a separate lot than the rest of the 16 ga tools.

Dave,
It's very possible that the roll crimp tool is for a 14 gauge.

David,

I was bidding on a 16 gauge roll crimper on ebay several months ago. I would have been very disappointed to have found it a 14 gauge, though I would think it is a rare find and worth more than you paid.

I measured my 14 ga. roll crimper at exactly 3/4 inch diameter across the top opening of the turn handle.

If it is a 14 ga. it is very rare. I have never seen one advertised.

Harry,

Was it the one that wasn't listed as 16ga, but you could read it on the tag in the picture?

I'll try to get some closer pics with a tape measure.

David,

I can't remember. Somehow I was under the impression I was bidding on a 16 gauge roll crimper.

Charlie,

They work quite well on plastic. I've seen many a 10ga roll crimper for $10-20, but never an 8ga. Might keep a hull in your pocket and check any 10s you get your hands on, as they may be 8s. Most of the old style roll crimpers had no markings on them.

Good luck with the search. I'll keep my eye out for you.
