If the FE has been in place for some time, it might help to use a 1/2 clothes pin inserted between the front of the FE and the barrel. Gently tap while holding the latch open. It may take 3 hands, or some assistance
A bone folder (about $5 at any leather craft store) works great. It looks like a white plastic letter opener.
