Some have all 3 rods fitting into a yoke and the threaded rod has a cotter pin that keeps it from coming out when the vise is opened all the way out.Some use a block that fits between the smooth rods and I think that is what you are missing.

Robert,

The part missing, in fact stabilizes the screw between the two guide bars. Does anyone have a picture of what it looks like?
