THE year was 1828. Novelists Leo Tolstoy and Jules Verne were being born worlds apart, the composer Franz Schubert was dying in Austria and thousands of Englishmen still bore the scars of Waterloo. And in the market town of Beverley, gunsmith Esau Akrill was putting his name to a store in the market place and forging a family trade that would last 173 years. Five generations have passed and the name Akrill has become synonymous with quality and old-fashioned service. Esau ran the store until 1880, and the man – or woman – in charge has always signed their name Akrill. Even an Emily Akrill ran the gun shop while the menfolk were away at war. Now Akrill’s is to close its doors after almost two centuries as a mainstay in the town. With a tear in his eye, the descendant of the first Akrill to sell weapons and ammunition from the humble store, will tomorrow say enough is enough.
