Does anyone know of a source for 2 7/8" 10 gauge lead and steel  shells? I'm too lazy to load them.

Thanks,

Lead can be picked up at gun shows occasionally in fresh condition.  ! 5/8 ounce is much more common than 1 1/4 ounce because the lighter loads were discontinued years before the 1 5/8 were.  They are collectable but you may find that the boxes will sell for as much as you pay for the shells if you put them on ebay.  I shot some tame mallards with some of mine a couple of weeks ago but shot so poorly I don't think I'll do it again.  Seeing those collector shells go up in smoke obviously caused me to stop my swing.

There is a country store/gun store in NH on the Maine/NH border...between Freedom NH and Porter ME.   The Proprietor has been hoarding  these lovely Remington specimens in a large military ammo box so long that he thinks they are worth $50/bx.  Maybe one of our members would be able to facilitate a better deal. The guy is bound to let loose of them sometime. The only redeeming factor...no sales tax!

He allowed me to take 2 boxes of 4s in the event that I might run into a "wild" turkey.

Not much help, but maybe I can find a source at Oshkosh this weekend...

I know, you said you don't care to reload but I have to.  My old Plain Twist chambers stop at 2&5/8" so I got some RMC brass and turned them down to fit (they come at 2&7/8"); and, I got their reloading kit too.  The Kit is not expensive and you can use it on the kitchen table or tail gate.  Not for high volume shooting but, still, a lot of fun and easy.

I think I've got a case bought at $20 a box as soon as I've got the chance to run over to the guys house and pick them up. I sure hope so, I'd love to have them to shoot at ducks next year. Not that I ever shoot lead at ducks of course.

Bismuth offers a 2 7/8" load that will be cheaper than the old lead shells and they are legal. Check the Bismuth web site out.

I bought a couple of Gauge Mates chamber inserts which fit a 10 gauge 2-7/8 chamber and accept a standard 2-3/4 12 gauge shell.  They cost about $35 as I recall.  Haven't tried them yet but they ought to allow shooting cheap 12 gauge loads in the 10.  My guess is that it takes 12 ga. loads with shot in plastic cups to make them work in the 10 bore.  The vendor who is somewhere in California as I recall says they will produce good velocity and patterns.  Anyone else tried these Gauge Mates?  Charlie

Mark is right on. Bro Tom used them in his 10 ga. Beretta SxS and they are the "right stuff" for ducks. KBM

Carlie, There is a web site with a great deal of information about the gage mate inserts. It gives results of patterns and velocities for the various gages. The one thing you need to be aware of is that you can not use promo loads or any shell with an aluminum base as it will expand and not eject after firing. They recomend on their website what ammo to use. I dont have the website handy but if you search gage mates or seminol which is the company in Floida that produces them you should get the info you need.  Larry

That's a great idea but both of my guns are # 6 frame 10's(hammer and hammerless)

and my experience is nobody with inserts has inserts for that size barrell

Charlie,

I have Gauge-Mates from California that can be purchased through Cabela's. These inserts for 10-12 ga have a slit the length of them that allows the shell to expand and the insert and shell are extracted at the same time. A simple push and the shell pops right out. I load 1 1/8 oz with 800X at about 5400 psi to run through an 1882 #2 frame Lifter with twist barrels. Shoots like gang-busters, but tighter 'n tight. 16" at 25 yds and evaporates clays. Can't wait for dove season to try it on distant birds.

Now Mark, you boys know I would never break the law and stoop so low as to shoot lead out of my 10 bore at ducks or geese. I was just saying I sure would "like" to have the shells for ducks next year. *clears throat*

Harry,   My 1878 10ga plain twist #2 frame lifter has a step at the end of its 2&5/8" chamber without a forcing cone.  Is the chamber-bore of your 1882 10ga configured the same or is it with the tapered forcing cone?

Cool looking product.  Updated address: http://www.gauge-mate.com/

- - -And if that doesn't work, go to Google and type Gauge-Mate in.

At 40 to 50 bucks a set  for most gauges, a fair price.

Their FAQ section is worth a read.  The firm is located in the general San Diego, Ca area. (El Dorado, Ca)

Thanks for the lead, Larry.

For a different type of insert go to http://www.seminolegun.com and click on chamber mates or go directly to http://www.chambermates.com.   Larry

Fred,

Just took an old Delta frequent flyer card and cut it just a hair over 13/16" wide and ran it into the breach until it stopped. My chambers are 2 7/8". I don't know if I'm qualified to answer the rest of your question, but the dark spot at the forcing cone is is not very long at all compared to other Parkers in the closet. It does look like a step rather than a taper.

Thanks Harry;   I used the wire depth guage on my caliper and it goes in to 2.62" and stops hard.  How about that 1874 11ga at Cabelas discussed on the other thread.
