How can UPS take the gun and pay?  Do they have an FFL?  By the way, if you want to keep the gun, the seller can assign the UPS insurance to you and you can deal with UPS and receive the insurance proceeds. I did this on one occasion and did keep the gun and had it repaired with the proceeds.  Bill Frech

While we are on the subject. How do you fellas handle the insurance question when shipping just part of a gun? For a long time I have had a couple of barrels to ship to Dale for refinish. I have wondered how to insure just the barrels from a DHE? I use the USPS for just about everything but I'm not sure they would insure barrels for the total worth of the gun. If the barrels "go south" all you have left is parts and certainly not any where near the value of the complete gun. Any experience/comments? Jack

Jack, won't USPS insure it for whatever you state and pay the rate for?  That's what I've done and they don't ask questions.

By the way, I've had no problems with USPS, takes a week or so, but I've had good experiences, course I almost always use a hard sided plastic case in a cardboard box. I would insure barrels for a substantial value of the gun. If the gun has a value of $10,000, I'd insured barrels for $7,000. May be overkill but I'd hate to try to find another set of barrels, have them restruck to the frame bolsters, refinished, etc.  Dale is so close its morning coffee but correct barrels are so hard to find.

When shipping barrels only I use a PVC tube, glue a cap on one end and a fitting on the other end that accepts a threaded plug. I wrap the barrels in soft packing and put them in the tube and thread the cap in, then pack this in a carton. I address both the tube and the carton in case they become seperated. It has been my experience that when you ship an obviously "damage proof" package such as a wooden box or in this case, a PVC tube the gorillas in the handling/sorting areas of UPS or FEDEX view it as a challenge and do their best to prove it "otherwise".

Jack, Bruce is correct. You can insure your bbls for whatever amount you want. The bbls I sent to Dale I insured for $2000 AND next day delivery. You figure the faster they have to deliver it, the less time it spends in their hands, the less time they have to damage it. I hope!!

Thanks for the info. I've held off bothering Dale for a couple years cause I knew he was really backed up but I don't expect waiting any longer is going to do either of us any good. Is there a good time to call him? I was always afraid I'm going to catch him at a bad time. Thanks, Jack

Jack,

You should be able to insure the barrels at the rate the gun is worth. As long as you can prove your DHE is worth (ex: $3500) then that's what you should insure the barrels for. What good is a gun without barrels? I spoke to someone I know at USPS and that is what they told me but the catch is proving what the gun is worth.

Russ, if you read my old post from Oct 2007 titled "Me vs UPS" you'll see a lot of what UPS did. I think you are in for no easy time. I hope I'm wrong though. :)

I well remember your experience with UPS Mike. I've related that story to a number of people. That entire post is worth a read for anyone who has yet to ship a gun. I also like the PVC or ABS tube for shipping bbls. As for insurance on USPS, I insured my bbls shipped to Dale for the full value of the gun. As someone said, what good is a gun with no bbls? You lose the bbls, you have nothing, or almost so. I'd say that taking a good batch of photos before you ship anything is a must. Proving value would be much easier if you have them.
