I have to wonder whether the outside of the box showed the kind of damage that would indicate that the broken stock was a result of UPS handling or a result of the seller packing a broken gun in the box.

I would tend to blame it on poor packaging. I know that doesn't make you feel any better, but most if these problems can be avoided with proper packaging. The stock fixer can fix it, but it'll always be a broke stock. :(

Bill ; I have spoken with the seller and he seems as sick over it as I do, actually the Box didn't appear to be damaged.

I'm with Bill on this; you would think the box would also show considerable damage. Is it your gun or is the person who shipped the gun still responsible? Either way it still stinks.:X If I'm going to ship an expensive gun UPS I put the gun in a hard case and put the case in a box with nothing to indicate what is inside. From there you just keep your fingers crossed.

Russ,

Sorry to see that, always a shame when a good gun gets damaged in shipping.

Last couple times I've shipped a thin wristed gun I've shrink wrapped the buttstock to a piece of 3/4 pine then wrapped the whole thing with bubble wrap before crating it up.

We've all got our gun sending horror stories, I've got a couple myself. I ship everything USPS registered mail but I've had trouble with that as well.

I was so paranoid one time that I shipped the seller my own case to pack my gun, hard cases are great.

Gill ... that's a great idea ... I saved a great box from a gun I bought from Jack Puglisi ... It's just cardboard, but it's specifically made for shipping guns.

Midway USA sells heavy cardboard boxes with foam liners, specifically designed for shipping guns.  Pricey, but sometimes on sale.

I can't believe you guys actually ship guns worth thousands of dollars in a cardboard box, I don't car how thick it is.  Geez, go to the local discount sporting good store and spend $35 on a basic hard shelled take-down case.  When shipping wrap the sections of the gun in news paper packing foam then take the case to a Kinkos or UPS Store and have them box the case.  THEN you take it to the USPS.  I have two such cases that have more frequent-flyer miles than I do.

BTW: for barrels I went to the hardware store and bought a 36" section of heavy 6"PVC tube and glued one end on.  I wrap my barrels in packing foam, put them in the tube and tape both ends.  Not the cheapest way to ship (because of the weight) but it would take a lot of force to even crack.

In your case, the seller was responsible for selecting the packing materials, the packing and the mailing.  To my thinking the problem is on his hands.  Obviously you have no motive to break the stock so there is a basic presumption that 1.) he screwed-up when he packaged it; or, 2.) it was broken when he sent it.  Either way, I would ship the gun back to him, packed appropriatly, ASAP.

I have gone to Wal-Mart and picked up a cheap plastic foam lined rifle case to ship my guns.  I paid less than $20.00 for it.  After putting my shotgun in it I put the thin cardboard cover it came in back on to add a little more support.  And then I bubble wrap it and place it in a cardboard box I made myself.  It's not as good as an expensive metal aircraft gun case but it works.

I found it funny that  people keep buying guns for over thousand  but do not want to pay $30 for solid plastic case from Walmart.

I've shipped well over 100 long guns in the past year, all Fed Ex (except for four that went overseas & those went USPS) I have yet to have a single one damaged or lost. Perhaps that's just luck or good packing on my part. Knock on Wood!

Russ,

As far as UPS is concerned the shipper has to file the claim. That is there policy no questions asked. You would not believe what they can destroy, it's unreal.

Sorry to hear that your stock is broken. I'll second Dave's reccomendation on  the stock fixer.

Stock fixers does great work, but how do you determine an amount for a claim.  There is the cost of the repair, plus the value lost in the gun because it is no longer original.  Is it a hard sell or is there someone who can come up with a number without a dispute?
