Very pretty gun Ron:
Question out of ignorance here. With the 28 vh images the Parker Bros engraving does not show. The name is on my family VH 12 ga. Why would it not be engraved on a 28??

Probably because it's a Remington era gun and it just says the word "Parker" on the bottom of the action.
Wonder what the deal is with the checkered side panels on a VH?
Is it hiding a repair?

Destry: I wondered about the checkering too, but I don't yet know enough as I go through the learning curve. I have never handled a 28ga anything, so I'm not familiar enough to do anything other than ask questions.
Cheers,
Jack

I have a GHE 12 with checkered side panels, and as far as I can tell, it's factory original and not hiding a head repair (but I have not had the wood off the gun yet).
We know that the Rem era guns were often assembled with whatever wood was sitting in inventory, so perhaps they had a stock that was already checkered for a higher grade gun?

YouAre Right Destry, This VH Was Ordered In 1935. I Do Not Have A Ship Date. I Have Not Taken The Stock Off But, Would Be Surprised If The Checkering Was Hiding Any Repair. Other Than A Couple Of Cracks In The Finish ,This Little Gun Is In Beautiful Condition
Best Regards, Ron

I have seen several Remington era Parkers in the lower grades with checked side panels. My circa 1936 16 gauge"hot rod" skeet gun is one of them and its all original.
Why and for what reason I have no idea.

Dave,I've Owned Her For almost Eight Years And Have Not Dropped Her Pins On Anything Other Than Snap Caps After Cleaning. Her Previous Owner Never Fired Her In The Thirty Odd Years She Was In His Care. I Have Been Tempted But Don't Want Anything About Her To Change. With Her 28''Tubes And Imp/CYL...Mod. Chokes I'm Sure She Would Be A Sweetheart.
Best Regards,
Ron

Ron: I respect your conservation approach. I, on the other hand, would be chasing roosters with it as often as I could get out. I have reached the stage of life where I would not want to deprive myself of the enjoyment offered by such a gun in the field. Whoever would get it after me would find a few field marks in the wood maybe and the the blue and colors a little lighter. I see some amazing guns on some of the high end auction sites and gun rooms (window shopping, rest assured). Every time I see a beautiful collection from an estate sale, I wonder what the collector would have thought. The heirs simply wanted to convert them to cash. I would let them get a bit less cash and exercise the guns. I believe somewhere along the way someone will be shooting it, so why not let that be me. We get one kick at this world (as far as I know) and we can't take them with us. That's my outlook.
Cheers,
Jack
BTW I really like the look of this somewhat etherial shot

Jack,
I Have Had That Conversation With Myself. It Saddens Me To Know That My Guns Don't Give Pleasure To Any One In My Family Other Than Myself.
Best Regards,
Ron
