Roger - I got a Mud Hens baseball cap in the early to mid 60s when major league baseball expansion was starting to take off. We weren't happy with it. So, dad and I took off to Toledo to see the Mud Hens. To see people trying to make it to the majors. Example; a routine ground ball to the third baseman........a major leaguer MIGHT make the trip to first base (many acted like they were already out)........a minor leaguer had to always try to make their 3.2 seconds to first base, or they were sent home. Why? Because the third baseman could have a heart attack and never get the ball off to first base. Those major league days are gone. The Mud Hens didn't dissappoint us in those days.
Back to the hat.......my dad worked shift work and when he worked on what he call "second trick" and got off at 4pm, I was already home from school. Everyday at that time when we could, we headed to a woods that was no more than 10 minutes from the house. It wasn't as nice as a Putnam County woods, but it served it's purpose for the daylight that was left. I wore my Mud Hens cap on those evenings we went squirrel hunting. Didn't want to wear it on our daytime treks and get it all sweaty when the sun was out in full force. We would stay in the woods as long as we could. Either the bugs would chase us out, or the deer would shine their headlights in our eyes.
The first 1 1/2 hours there, our prime target was the fox squirrel. If the old ones were outsmarting us at that time, and they could, my dad would have me switch over to red squirrel, or what I remember some folks would call "red jimmies". They were fast and small, but my 12g H&R single shot that my dad bought me was , by his designs, to train me to be a better sure shot. Red squirrel were always stupid and in abondence. I think it may take about 100 of them just to make a sandwich..........and........if you threw a splash of iceberg lettuce on it, the lettuce might overtake the flavor. But whatever we brought home.......ya skinned it.........ya gutt it..........ya cooked it.........ya ate it. Can't tell you how many of our Monday thru Fridays were like that.
I think the Mud Hens cap got lost in our move into a new house a couple years ago. And after all of this time, it began to smell worse the south end of a north bound skunk anyway.
In my effort to get the word "annual" off of this thread, we still have thunderstorms today. No chance of shooting the Parker this weekend.

Bill - I am in the middle of a list of things that I have to do to qualify myself for dove hunting this coming season. Since weather seems to be holding me up in taking care of part of that list.....I thought that I would jump ahead here a little bit. You mentioned that your dad often wore a tie when he went hunting as my dad did. In an effort to NOT say "it's the end of an era", I thought that I would seek your opinion on this. What do you think?......the green one?.....the red one?.....the blue one?.....the purple one?.....the brown one?.....or the tan one? Attached Image (viewed 372 times):

Tom get modern via a bib overalls and a holey T shirt. Texas is too hot for the dressed up look in a dove field.

See Roger - It's advice like that you can't get at any other site. Bibs it is!
Shot THE PARKER yesterday for the first time after it's 40 year nap. What a kick. As I told Jay Gardner yesterday, "I won't dare post a score after 2 boxes of shells, but I'm pretty sure those clays were just taking a test flight".
Am hoping to go back out tomorrow to test some more clays.

Roger - I thought that prevailing thunderstorms wouldn't let me shoot yesterday, but I got up early yesterday morning.......sun was shinin........birds were singin. Managed to get through a almost a box of shells at the range before a new issue of the dark sky rolled in and cut my shooting off with a down-pour. In the meantime, I did head to Target for a pair of bib overhalls. Great suggestion. That takes care of the December start of the season for me.
I am fortunate to be in an area of Texas that will allow me access to 2 calendar months of dove hunting. The state is divided into 4 sections for 4 different calendar periods. Houston or Interstate 10 divided the largest portions. First season starts in Sept. Mid Dec. starts the second. The bibs can handle Dec. just fine.
September is very much a different story. While BBQ pits and Texas have a strong partnership here, it is still hot enough in Sept. to cook a 7 course meal right out on your concrete driveway to feed a 1000 people. When I walk out the front door, I step on the grass. The uniform, at that time will have to be a little different. The only suggestion that has come to me so far is to wear what some people try to get away with on Galveston beach. On me, that wouldn't be a pretty picture. People would run like there was a tsunami coming. Will have to get with native buddies to pinpoint a uniform for that month.
Roger, I think I am getting close to ending this thread. Just have a couple small items left that involve taking care of dad's gun that make me the official owner and caretaker. Those answers are already forthcoming from the fine folks at this site. Can't wait to get my official acknowlegement in the mail as a PGCA member. I certainly enjoy reading your helpful responses to folks at this site.
So, bibs and a t-shirt.......What color of a tie would you wear with something like that?

This is a very special thanks to those at this site who gave me info by forum post or email to qualify me to be a caretaker of my dads gun. I feel like it's mine now. Shot it again this a.m. It's mine. This Parker is no longer an annual event. It is doing what it was designed to do. Thanks again. Attached Image (viewed 187 times):
