Ithacas - pure junk!  Stay away from them - at least the lovely little Grade 5 20 gauge I saw at Allentown last weekend, until the seller and I can come to terms!

Paul ... You'll get no arguement from me ... The engraving on the Ithaca is absolutely gorgeous ! ... I'm no art critic, but someone once sais that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" ... So one person may love the engraving os a particular brand of gun, and another person may think it's absolutely hideous ... It's all a matter of taste.

I have "no dog in this fight" as far as Ithaca Gun are concerned- never have owned any of them, didn't realize there were so many models before the N.I.D.- must have been a strong action- didn't Elmer Keith use a Ithaca 10 Mag for his Western Pheasants?? About 5-6 years ago-went to a gun show with a pal- we saw an Ithaca grade 4 E NID 20 bore- Beavertail, DT- PG= red "sunburst pad" Believe asking price was $2750- asked the dealer permission to look it over-he had "taped" the breech closed with an electrician's cable tie- sow the action could not be opened apparently- we asked him to remove the tie- so we could further examine it- he refused- citing the "Gun Show rules" didn't allow that- but we could pick it up and hold it if we liked- when my pal got out his pocket Stanley tape measure- this guy's face went white- he stammered- no need fellas- they're 28 inch barrels-but Tommy had already "taped" them at 26 & 5/8"- 26" even- 28" even 30" even- all day long- like a guy trying to bluff a pot away from your wired trip Queens with a pair of treys- this guy knew he had been "Had" trying to put a fast one- Caveat Empetor alright- did Ithaca always use the same numerical codes for their chokes- even on the Flues and later Knick single trap guns? Just curious-

Paul--A lovely Crass.  I restored a grade 2, missed a grade 3 at Cabela's and passed on a grade 4 that Jack Puglisi had for the longest time.  He even dropped the price to less than 2K over Christmas.  Somebody that needed it more than I did got a really nice gun.  I think Walt Snyder points out that Joseph Loy did a lot of the early nice Ithaca engraving, either before or after working on Remington 1894's.  Ithaca also occasionally used some really nice chain damascus that I've never seen on Parkers.  All in all, Crass models always get my attention.  Lewis and Minier's are OK, but I just can't warm up to the Flues, or to the post 1908 engraving at all.  Hope to see you this weekend at the Merchandise Mart.

Paul Driscoll:  You may not like how your photos posted but I do.  I tried to buy a grade 6 one time and couldn't get it done.  That is a nice 5 you have much better than the NID 5 to my way of thinking.

Timothy, Kevin is only pulling our chains about the Grade 5.  However, I'll bet he is salivating over the gator gun case.  Tell us about it.  I once almost bought a Purdey just to get the crocodile leg of mutton case that came with it.

Bill,

It comes with the 5-E if I buy it.  BUT this is the exact problem that this thread addresses.  The Ithacas get no respect.  Two pretty nice guns in the picture and the only thing noticed is the gun case.  If we replaced the guns with grade for grade Parkers or L C Smiths I think the case would become secondary.

Engraving aside, rightly or wrongly, the early Ithacas have a reputation of having weak frames.  The later Ithacas, while being touted as being among the stoutest American doubles are too slab-sided for my tastes.  I guess that means ugly, in a nice way.

Ithaca.  Future of American gun collecting?  With prices getting higher on most the other American makers perhaps Ithaca stands to start being more collectible?

Ed, I agree on the NID's they are like the model 21's to me I do not like them.  But, I do know of a cute little 5-E NID 20 with a straight grip and splinter fore end that I would not mind owning.

Since the debate about the value of Ithaca's has been brought up on the Parker forum, can anyone tell me where I can find information, such as factory letters, on Ithaca's?  I've attached a few pictures of a Sousa grade single barrel trap that I'd like to get more information on.  Any help would be appreciated.

Tom,

If I remember correctly,  you posted a short barreled GHE a while back and now a Sousa grade Ithaca single barrel trap gun.  Where do you come up with these shotguns?  How about posting something good for a change?

No matter what brand of shotgun you prefer, you have to like the mermaid on the trigger guard found I believe only on the Sousa Grades.  I've never seen a Sousa grade side by side but they are known to exist.

I'm not sure how to letter an Ithaca but I'm sure someone here does know if it is possible.
