Would not that mark more often be "WK" for Walter King, Supt. of the Gun Works who came along well after #601's birthday.

Here are the pictures showing the K (faintly) near the proof marks and the K between the barrels.  I'm also attaching a picture of the top of the barrel showing the Parker Bros stamping.  Have you seen the "s" in Bros be that much off-line?

Actually Don, Angus King was Walter's father and supervised the gun works until Walter took over the responsibilities from his father after serving about a couple of decades under dear old Dad. K was for Angus and WK was for Walter King, the son.

Drew,

I tried to get better pictures of the 10 gauge with laminated barrels, but none were any better than than the one you show on the picture trail. The area with the thinnest finish is on the left barrel near the rib inscription and the picture shows that area. I may have to use it for awhile before I can get better pictures. I'll get to work on that for you as soon as possible;). There are no letters or other stamps other than the usual patents, an L, and the barrel weight on it.

Bob

Article in the latest Shooting Sportsman about new Greener guns made in the UK with damascus barrels.

Drew, may I suggest you put together a Parker Pages or DGJ article about damascus barrels. This website only has a very limited readership of maybe 30-40 readers whereas our Parker Pages has 1000, and DGJ significantly more.  About anybody with a real interest in double guns takes the DGJ.

Thanks Bruce, but part of the problem is that many of the pics on the PictureTrail have been 'harvested' from DoubleGunBBS and internet auction sites (Greg Martin does a particularly good job with high quality pics) And unfortunately, I wasn't careful  to attribute pics to contributors when this first started , most of whom were 'involuntary'. Although the pics are in the Public Domain, they are still the 'property' of the poster, and I probably could get sued. I have no commercial interest in the albums, and am just thankful that we've been able to recover some of Dr Gaddy's previously 'lost' knowledge. It's possible that little segments of the various damascus albums might start appearing in Double Gun Classics e-zine  http://www.doublegunclassics.com/alt/index.html  (without payment to me)

I very much appreciate the insight provided by folks here and hope, over time, some more 'clues' as to the Belgian damascus sources will be discovered (so keep checking your barrels guys! :) )  and BTW: just today received a pic of a Colt 1883 Grade 2 brl with the same 4 Iron Crolle damascus pattern as that on a Baker Presentation grade.

Got an idea Bob-do your brls look anything like this?

This is Dr Gaddy's 'One Iron Crolle' example, which would be the next step up from 'Twist', and would fit Parker's progression of barrel quality. Maybe 'One Iron Laminated Steel' is what Parker called "Fine Laminated Steel" on the O, I, and H grades??

Drew,

Under the artificial light I took the additional pictures of the 1893 laminated barrels the pattern didn't show well, so I tried again in the bright sunlight. Check these out and let me know if you would like me to email you the higher resolution ones. I'm on a slow dial up so it takes awhile. Thank you.

Excellent Bob-thanks for your perseverance! I can 'harvest' those shots from the thread and to my eye, that probably IS One Iron Crolle (which would make sense as being between Twist and Two Iron in quality).  We'll get them added to the PictureTrail.

Dave, you're absolutely right. My apologies to you, Don, and everyone else for the misleading post. I don't know where I got the "Angus" thing stuck in my head. . . probably remembering there was a name starting with A and remembering it was an unusual name. . . so, it was Charles Alonzo King, father of Walter A. King, who was superintendant of the Parker gun works from 1874 - 1908. . . still way after "the birth of 601."

Thanks for the correction Dave. Just goes to show ya that I should keep my "bible" (TPS) close by when posting here.

It just came to me!  Duh. . . Angus King was the recently defeated governor of the State of Maine. A governor whom I admired a great deal for his sympathies toward sportsmen's issues and concerns.

Mystery solved.
