Weston your and Kevins photos are more interesting than my current PP.

Thanks for sharing and it would be neat to hang them along with some other prize scenes I have of hunting on a decitated wall in my gun room.

Thanks again Ol' Clunk/Roger

Kevin must be congratulated.  There are no books out there on training railbirds to pose for pictures.

Roger,

I've got the rest of my Toledo related hunting postcards pulled out. Now all I have to do it make my way downtown and do the prints for you. I made it this far, it only took me 6 months to get the last ones together. *wink*

Weston,

Thanks for sharing your old photos, you have some nice early Hunting images...

I recently acquired several old Sporting periodicals from the early 1900's with some well written articles and images on the subject of Railbird shooting, and it's great reading the older stories.

Similar to the Rail image you first posted, I often find original old Hunting and Parker related photos in rough condition showing their age with scratches, stains, and other damage... For about the past 5 years I've been experimenting with minor restoration on a few of the rougher photos in our collection, with good results... After looking at your Rail shooting image yesterday, curiosity got the better of me and last night I spent a little time working on it. I wanted to see if I could clean up the sky and also some of the scuffs in the water and marsh areas... It was good practice for me, and thought you might find these touch up's interesting. The before and after images are below.

Best, Chris ~ CSL

Chris, could we get the 28" barrels extended to 32" and slim them down to 28 gauge?  One final request, can we get Weston's Great Granddaddy switched from the poling position to the shooting position?   Weston, that is truly an alltime great railbird gunning picture.

Weston, My Grandfather, Eben Petigrew Verner from Charleston shot the same waters with a Parker at about the turn of the last century. His father bought a place near Brevard which we still have. The Parker was given to the husband of of my first cousin who didn't hunt much! Alas! well, I was young at the time and had a small voice in such matters. Thanks for showing us the pictures and history!

I believe Weston is on his way over to Bill Murphy' house right now to talk with him personally concerning the remarks made about his Grandfather's position in the skiff... Twice!

Bill, if you hurry, you may have just enough time to grab your sleeping bag and head for the hills... I'm sure Weston is not happy with your comments, and really, who can blame him?

If we don't hear from Murph again, I guess we can assume Weston caught him in the driveway with "Both-Barrels" as Bill sat pick'n his nose and warming up the old Ford wagon...

This leaves us all wondering why someone would say such things about another Man's respected old Grand-Dad.... Is nothing sacred anymore?... Wow!

RIP ~ Bill Murphy

Chris,

You do great work and I appreciate your cleaning it up a bit. I had imagined that those barrels were lost in a cloud of smoke!

Don't worry about ol' Bill and me. He's just enjoying the picture and the long gone era it represents.

Thanks Eric and Weston,

It's sort of like wiping the dust off an old relic and finding a treasure underneath...

I liked your image of the Hunter with his Parker and Turkey too, Thanks for posting them.

Weston, that's darn nice of you letting ol' Bill off the hook, I sorta figured they would be loading him in the coroner's wagon about now... Your a true gentleman.

Best, Chris

If Weston came up here to protect Great Granddad's honor, we would end up in the gun room waving Parkers around and spilling Cognac on the carpet.  I kind of like the Morehead City picture.  I visit friends within sight of MC on Bogue Sound, realize the rich hunting heritage of the area.  The Waterfowl Museum on Harker's Island across Core Sound from Cape Lookout is a must see for anyone who passes the area.

Long as we're looking at neat old Parker photos, here's one I found a long time ago.  My guess is it's not far from 1900.  I can't determine the grade of Parker but looks to have a hard rubber butt.   Those were the days.....

Chris, Weston,Joe etc.

Just couldn't stand it any longer gang.

I've saved these images and sent them over as jpegs to my pre press department in the print plant to be outputted as a collage on one of our large format high resolution printers. 30"x40".

I'll let you know how they reproduce and promise you won't see them being hawked on E-Bay.

Thanks,

Brad

Or, perhaps today is the "good old days".  Photo is of me near the end of this year's quail season here in Texas.  Crop of bobs and blues on our ranch was the best in living memory.....and probably won't repeat for a long time.  Gun is my Parker #1 12 bore damascus that I usually carry.
