Not likely Parker related but attached is a picture of my great grandfather, William J. Crosswell, hunting circa late 1890s. Although from Greenville, SC,at the time he was the superintendant for The Southern Express Co in Wilmington, NC and this picture was probably taken either there or further south in Georgetown, SC in the rice fields. I have another framed picture with the boat full of mallards.

I have his old summer cottage in Cedar Mtn, NC from 1886. There was always a "US Arms"  double 12 hammer gun over the fireplace which may have been his but certainly isn't the gun in the picture since it is shot loose, the stock broken, and a hammer screw missing. I do have his powder dipper and a few other odds and ends.

And I thought I had good "sea legs" after 60 years on the water. Weston that picture is a treasure since so few pictures survived from that era. The boat looks similar to a pirot from cajun country...Roger

That's a great photo. I especially like his 'caddy'...must be hard being out on a boat and not getting to do any of the shooting!

At least Weston's Granddaddy was politically correct.  He employed someone not of his race to shoot ducks (or railbirds) for him while he leisurely poled the boat!

Weston,

This is definitely a rail skiff and it looks as though they are in a freshwater marsh or meadow somewhere.  Pictures of early railbird shooting are rare because almost no one carried a camera around with them in those days like they do today and even fewer would hazard a camera out on the water where it could get drenched or worse, dropped overboard.  Since this is one of my chosen fields of passion in the outdoors, I would be very interested in the deails of this photograph - especially where it was taken, date, and any other info you can provide us.  I have been gathering "Railbirdiana" for my book for a little over 10 years (I have one whole chapter written already!) so photos like this and accompanying info definitely get my attention.   KBM

Bill, you're assuming that guy was employed and not owned outright!;)

Kevin,

Attached is the back of that photo with an Oct 1896 date. I just don't know what the apparent abbreviation "Sova." means.

He was 57 when he died in 1903 so about 50 when this was taken. That would qualify him for the younger half of this group's membership.

I suspect this is in the Georgetown area because I have a number of other very faded pics that are labeled as such. I'd be happy to share with you any that may be of interest.

Let's see the one with the boat full of mallards too!!!!

I'm probably as interested in old hunting photos as I am double barrel shotguns so this is right my my alley.

Great stuff!!! Wish we had this sort of thing in my family. My people all hunted and fished but I guess nobody had a camera. Our oldest sporting image is my Grandfather and Uncle Bob in their bird shooting clothes about 1959.

Weston,

It is a virtual certainty that the notation is "Sora" (for Sora rail, a freshwater habitat-only species).  It is one of the four most commonly encountered rails (others are Clapper, a saltmarsh bird; King, the largest of the four, and Virginia, very similar in size and habit to the Sora, but with a longer bill [see attached image].  There are other species (e.g., Black[very rare; protected], and Yellow [rare and seldon seen.)  The cool thing about rails is that, like woodcock and snipe, unless you are a birdwatcher or a hunter, your chances of seeing one are slim to none, given their near-total aquatic environment.  I am most interested in any and all of these photos you would care to share.  Many thanks, KBM

Weston....

As Kevin, I too have great interest in the old photos. This is great and I am sure Kevin is right..it is "Sora". Might be a candidate for a calendar.  A treasure and it would be wonderful to have a copy. What else is in your treasure chest?

Regards, Art

Although the Sora Rail shooting picture is the classic of the group, the others with Parkers evident are just wonderful.  What notations are on the back of the other pictures?

Because these are actually pretty small pics, I never knew before scanning and posting these today that there apparently is a Parker involved. I was excited to see that hinge pin.

Most don't have anything other than perhaps initials on the back. The fellow with the turkeys is Jordan Frye and his brother may be the photographer.

Excellent! It would be nice to have a few copies of those made and put them up around the house.
