True, CSL, but for the "16 gauge top lever project" 'twixt TIG and file, we can make almost any O frame bbls fit...after hunting quail last week with a 5 1/2 lb 1880 Joseph Lang 30" damascus 16g hammer, an O frame damascus Parker top lever is a bit on the heavy side. Those Vulcan tubes would have perked it up a bit.

Why were these barrels dragging so much interest? About a year ago a 26-inch set of very nice 16-gauge 0-Frame VH-Grade barrels with forearm brought $1225 after a lot of spirited bidding.

Thirty-inch, full/full does it for me along with the EEEEEEEEEjectors.
New barrels came out of production FULL/FULL to allow the chokes to be cut to a particular order or spec.
Would have been perfect for my project Damascus GHE.

Also in this case length matters.

I would have liked them for my PHE 20 ga as it would have allowed me to make it a 16 / 20 gun, which is far more noble than some measly Damsacus upgrade
A word to the wise....next time there comes such a jewel at auction let's not all trip over ourselves in driving the bidding up so soon. That helps no one but the seller!

Frank,
You are correct about auction bidding. If one bids early, one is in fact bidding against one's self. Early bidding serves only to raise the price that the item is ultimately sold for. Wait until the last few seconds and enter a bid that is the maximum about that you wish to pay for the item, regardless of what the current bid is. You'll be very surprised by the results.

Good Advice. I do most of my ebay bidding on old sporting books and will wait until the last few seconds but make sure your time is synchronized with the exact Pacific time on ebay's clock. I was on the downstroke on a last second bid thinking I had another fifteen or so seconds left and before I could apply enough finger pressure the screen changed to "Auction Has Ended" and it was a book about as desirable as those o-frame barrels .

One word solution. Software. Google for it. There is plenty.

You can use software, if you're girly-man, but real men use a clock and their trigger finger!

Amen. An e-snipe bid for $700.00 does not beat a last second trigger finger bid for $701.00.

But that e-snipe stuff sure keeps you from having to sit up till 3am waiting to do it. Do I have it, NO, but I wish I did.

Don, It's good to hear you've adjusted your thoughts on the barrel improvising subject...
How's the "No Dolls Head" project coming?...

My friend Russell has relented and recreated a proper "doll's head" on the 30" Trojan barrels now gracing his D grade hammer. The testing of the "Miller" installation on the "mule" stub twist top lever has been successful with a number of rounds of trap under its belt. The "Miller" installation on my D grade 32" factory Titanic top lever is almost complete and we await the arrival of the duplicated straight grip Turkish stock so Russ can complete the package to my sinister dimensions. We aim to have both of the D grade hammers, restocked, retriggered, tested and ready to defend our honor in August at the Grouse Hall Vintager's Glorious Twelfth Live Bird Shoot. Setting aside the M21s we have used to win the event ( Russ thrice, yrs. truly but once) the last 4 years may be imprudent but our belated entry into the hammer craze is too far gone to stop now. Hammers Back!

Don, how is the conversion of Trojan barrels to hammer gun accomlished? Is a barrel stop somehow fabricated or is the entire lug assembly switched to the three lug hammer gun style?

Bill-the front lump is partially milled off to eliminate the cocking hook and then a barrel stop is fashioned. The bolting is the same. If you take the large flat screw out of a set of hammerless barrels and take out the hook you can try them on a top lever hammer gun for rough sizing. Fairly straightforward if you happened to be an enthusiastic gunsmith - DonLast edited on Sun Jan 29th, 2006 12:36 pm by Don Kaas
