Cool GH with Social Security number on back of trigger guard

I just bought a 1904 GH, 12 Ga. Damascus 28 barrels, capped pistol grip. Gub is about 80%. Upon cleaning found ols SS number on back of trigger guard, anyone know how to research this SS number 106-450-229. Mine starts with 255 and I am 65 , so whomever had this number would probably have been born in early 1900s . Does anyone know when SS numbers started, would be nice to know who had this gun at one time. Serial number on gun is 127824, matches all specs. in book. Barrels perfect so not shot much, or whomever had it took exceptional care of it.

in the early day of assigning the SSN - the first three digits were assigned as a regional identifier. Later as people became more mobile, that idea was abondoned and numbers were issued sequentialy from a new starting point on a national basis. You may be surprised to know that it is entierly possible that many number are not unique due to overlaps of numbers issued under the original system.

there are SSN searches available, ancestry.com i believe is one site that has the limks.

When did they change the area identifier? Mine starts with 069 and I have been in NY since 1942.

Bill, New York has a whole stack of numbers assigned to them, specifically 050 to 134. That 106 is just one of them.

I, my Grandpa, and my wife all have Minnesota SSNs that do not make sense chronologically. Grandpa's card is dated in 1935, mine was obtained in 1972 and my wife's card in 1980. Good luck on your quest. A lot of those geneological websites tease you with a tiny bit of info and then ask for a credit card for the good stuff! Keep us posted, I am curious. Cheers!
