Great shot, Chris. My Wirehair, Eva, climbed up about ten feet into a cedar tree to catch a squirrel. When they came to ground, the squirrel was dead. The squirrel obviously misjudged the dog's climbing ability.

Squirrel hunting is dear to my heart. It was how I learned to hunt as a boy, with a .410. I started selling squirrels for a quarter apiece. My shells cost 12 cents each, so if I made a one shot kill I made 13 cents. It was crucial to not need a second shot, to stay in the black.
When I got hold of a .22 I thought I'd get rich, relatively speaking, for a 11 year old. Never went back to a shotgun for squirrels. |

I sure miss ol’ Charlie Cleveland’s stories of his “squirl” hunting escapades.

I love hunting them with one of my vintage .22's.

Missouri has an abundance of squirrels and a season that starts around Memorial Day and lasts through mid-February.
Still searching for the best Brunswick Stew (that's the original from Brunswick County, Virginia version) recipe. (I will not eat butterbeans!!) I grew up hunting squirrels with my Sears .410 while my Pop head-shot them with his J. C. Higgins auto .22. He liked short hollow points for squirrels. They still work if you can find them.
