Default 1881 W&C Scott & Son:

Pretty decent local find, out the door for under $600. It’s a 12 gauge, 30-5/8” barrels with shiny bores. Scott made many grades, this one locks up tight and has withstood the test of time.

Very nice Bruce. The barrels are "English 2 Stripe" retaining remarkable contrast!
Easy to see the straight ribband edge welds and "zipper" rod-rod welds

Default It needs a little attention:

There is a tiny, very shallow underside barrel ding about 7” from the muzzle that will have to be addressed. Shouldn’t be an issue. Hopefully it can be pressed out without having to restore the set.

Default Stock length: The rest of the story

The stock is too short for me, it has two thin layers of rubber glued on and will be replaced with a 5/16” spacer and a Silver Co. pad. The comfortable minimum length of pull for me is at least 14”, so with the added spacer and the pad it will accomplish that. Despite the added labor to get it right, it was a decent deal and the gun deserved my ability to get it field ready. Chalk it up as a rescue gun that needed a little love.
I researched the S.W. Silver & Co. pad and it was patented in 1874, using India rubber. Though not original to the gun the pad is periodic correct and will enable an acceptable LOP. If you’ve ever shot a short shotgun you know that your thumb will give your nose an unpleasant greeting.

I like those old Scott’s, and that’s a fine one. I have a 10 bore that looks awfully similar. What type forend latch does yours have?

Ops, I see it now. Just like mine!

I believe that is a Scott patent.

I’m not sure what this patent represents?

I don’t know either, but I doubt that it’s for the forend latch. I have the little Scott book somewhere. If I can find it, I’ll check to see if it has patent information.
