Hurting the value really depends on the condition of the gun now.
But it really would be best to add something to add traction. Such as sandpaper, grip tread or a piece of that beretta gell pad.

I would use anything but sandpaper. It can ruin a nice shooting shirt, jacket or cest in pretty short order.
The Beretta gel pads are very good and pretty inexpensive. .

has anyone taken the dogs head plate off and installed a thin pad without cutting the stock? kick eez makes a 1/2 pad but don’t know if it can be scored to conform to the curve of the stock ?

the two guns in question are 100% restored trojan 16 gauge and a gh grade 12 gauge that i’m using while at the same time restoring

There was a dogs head butt plate on the Trojan when I bought it but the stock was broken at the wrist so put new factory Parker stock on it and reinstall dogs head butt plate

Trojans did not have dog’s head buttplates. If it did, then it wasnt correct. And, trojans buttplates were never spurred.
