Charlie,as we light our grills and watch the fireworks tonight, we need to remember back to the battle for our independence and amid the bombs bursting in air, our flag was still there! I pray that it will always be so, today we face a new fight for independence, the freedom to bear arms! Though some may not like the comparison free men and firearms go hand in hand! A second fight is to keep our history from being erased from the books. The president, the South Carolina Carpetbagging Governor, the Yankee Virginia Governor, Walmart, Mattel, Amazon, boring NASCAR, "No Bubba" Watson, Dale "Traitor to the South" Earnhardt Jr., etc. all jump on the bandwagon to make a buck and/or be politically correct.

Gary, remember we had a conversation about this last year. My son was renting a place in MD and the woman would not let him park a car in the driveway there with a Sons of Confederate Veterans license plate. The same son while in school had the teacher ask his class "Does anyone know what day this is?" He raised his hand and told her it was Lee-Jackson day, for Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. She told him he was wrong, "it was for Robert E. Lee and Andrew Jackson." She never corrected it.

General Patrick Cleburne, who gave his life for the Confederacy, knew what would happened. He never owned a slave and in 1863 proposed freeing all of them to fight the North for the freedom of the South.

“Every man should endeavor to understand the meaning of subjugation before it is too late...It means the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy; that our youth will be trained by Northern schoolteachers; will learn from Northern school books their version of the war; will be impressed by the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors, and our maimed veterans as fit objects for derision..."

A friend sent me this today and I thought I would share. Worth a read, to bad its not taught in schools like it once was!

• On July 2, 1776, Congress voted to declare independence from Great Britain.
• On July 4, 1776, Congress voted to accept the Declaration of Independence, marking July 4 as Independence Day.

When I was a kid, I remember going to my great aunts home in Raritan, NJ. and on the wall in their basement hung a copy of the Declaration in a frame. It was old, aged and cracked but in fairly good shape. It was found in the walls of a grand old home from that era which belonged to my fathers family which was torn down to make room for a new home in which they lived. They also found a musket from that era which also hung on the wall. The old home sat on a canal which lead to the Raritan River and there was a tunnel underneath the home. It turns out that Lafayette and George Washington had stayed there during the revolutionary war, the document was a copy of the Declaration of Independence and now resides in the Smithsonian in Washington. It hung in their basement for 40 years until my uncle could convince them that it may be valuable and had it authenticated. I can still remember every time I went there I would head for the basement to see the musket, as I was always fascinated with guns , and there hung the Declaration. Little did I know the significance of that document at the time. The area around Raritan, NJ. was a hotbed of activity during the revolution and as it turns out the tunnel under the house was for escape if the British had discovered who inhabited the house. My uncle has the musket and someday I hope to inherit it.

Jerry, With me you are preaching to the choir, All history should be studied,and researched whether it be Dr Kings gallant efforts for racial equality, or The confederate charge at Gettysburg under all those battle flags, Do we just forget these folks that fought and laid down their lives for what they believed in? I say No! They are pieces of the puzzle that go together, that make this country what it is, the greatest nation on earth! It is a sad day when history, however perceived, is being swept under the table. These things happened, they should not be erased from the chalkboard of history, Gary

I'm trying to find resources to better understand our history between 1776 and 1800, specifically the history that led to the debates over the Constitution and Bill of Rights and the implementation and acceptance of this documents. Any suggestions?
