Default lc smith long range

well this evening i patterned the old gun with00 buckshot 9 pellets to the load and made by winchester..the gun has 32 inch barrels and chokes are modified and full..range was 40 yards target was the 30 inch circle.. i tried the full choke barrel first it put all 9 pellets in the 30 inch circle but the measured spread was only 24 inches.. very good i thought.. then i tried the modified choke barrel it only put 5 of the pellets in the circle of 30 inches and was spread the full circle...so definately the full choke does make a big differance even in shooting buckshot. charlie

Thirty inches is quite a lot more than the height of a buck's body at the boiler room area... I'd keep my shots at 30 yards or less with that load.

jim i live in north mississippi we are allowed to shoot buckshoot or slugs or rifles either..my lc smith long range patterns good on the test board with 91.5 percent in the 30 inch circle useing 7 1/2 shot..it should be a good turkey gun..jim tell us about your lc smith long range... heh dean now that only measured 24 inches across that pattern.. your rite about the distance with buckshot shots should be kept fairly close...lots of deer have been lost and died and not found shooting buckshot at too far of distance...i only know of one deer that got away shot by me shooting buckshot most either dropped in tracks or went no farther than 40 yards i do keep my shots to a close distance but i do like to no what each of my old shotguns are capable of... charlie

My LC Smith is a 1924 vintage Ideal grade, 3" chambers. Hope to use it
For geese and perhaps Turkey. I also have a LC Smith field grade in
10 bore. Used that gun in S. Dakota for pheasants. Loaded up 120 grains
Black powder and 1-3/8 oz. 6 shot in brass hulls. Even got some
Birds! I deer hunt in Wis. And Mn., no buck shot up here. I have
Considered loading up old Belgium double muzzle-loader with
Ball and trying that during black powder season.

jim you have a fairly rare gun there in that 3 in ideal grade..i like these old 3inch guns your gun should make a good goose gun..i m not a goose hunter not enough in my area to really hunt...now there is several turkey around me and thats my game..those old 10 ga smiths will really reach out there it sounds like you had a good load for those pheasants..sorry you cant hunt with buckshot to me its a good deer stopper if range is kept close... if i was you i would load up that old belgum gun and go for it..i m trying to get a deer with a 8 ga hammer parker with a pumpkin ball load did not get one last year with it but it will be back in the woods this fall.. jim do you have any parkers... charlie

I have two, a VH and a GH, both 16's. They are at my gunsmith
Getting a couple of things fixed. Do you have any recommendations
For non-toxic loads for 3" Smith? Factory loads? If I reloaded
I would use bismuth, nice shot, or ITX. Bismuth is hard to find and not
Sure if bismuth or nice shot would be better.
I like the Idea of using 8 gauge with pumpkin ball, that's
Almost elephant worthy!

I highly recommend Nice Shot. 10 gauge Nice Shot in my Parker NH made the cleanest kills I have ever seen.

Charlie, You are lucky to have that LC Smith Long Range. When I get a few others off my wish list, I am going to get one too.

Jim, not only is a 3" Ideal a rare gun, a ten gauge Field Grade is probably just as rare. Tell us about it.

Bill.....The field grade 10gauge is in very nice shape, mint damascus
Bores and locks up tight. Great story on how I acquired it. I stopped
At a local pawn shop I frequent and asked if they had any good " old
stuff". They showed me a couple of guns and then pulled out this old
double. They wern't too impressed with it, due to the Damascus barrels.
Honestly, I wasn't too impressed myself they told me it was a twelve gauge.
They offered it to me for a price I couldn't refuse. I was sure happy when
I got home and realized I had purchased a 10 gauge.
