Correcting the spelling of a name of a person being discussed shouldn't be a vehicle for humor. The the post of the first poster who corrected the spelling should have been the last post on the subject.

It stems from the fact that it is a name so commonly misspelled. In fact, it is almost a sure thing that it will be misspelled. It's probably more exasperation than humor. Maybe a 90/10 mix.

I seem to see Ithaca misspelled Ithica more than anything else in that part of New York.
