The un-hooking slide is more than likely the problem. The spring that operates it is fairly small in diameter and can be prone to rusting problems due to it being a hard place to keep it oiled.
I've had two guns with the same problem. Both of these had broken slide return springs. If Bob's method doesn't work, pull the slide out of the frame & inspect the spring.
