Default “Heat of the Summer” – Young Shooters “Virtual” Summer Competition

Mary and I are often asked by Members, and non-Members alike, what “Phase II” of our Youth Initiative would encompass – and when it would be announced. Well – after several conversations and careful deliberations between the two of us – WELCOME to.........

Heat of the Summer
Begins June 1, 2012 and ends August 31, 2012

Rules- they are really short and easy to understand (hey, there are only two of us – so don’t be looking for some elaborate set of rules, OK?? )

  1. The youth competitor must be 21 years or YOUNGER the first time they shoot their “registered” targets. Registered targets can be shot and scored beginning June 1, 2012. If the youth shooter turns over 21 after they shoot their first set of targets – they are still registered to compete for the duration of the competition (which ends 8/31/12).
  2. If a young shooter is NOT currently a Member of the youth program – complimentary Membership will be awarded to them if they compete and complete one (or all) of the competition events; and
  3. In the event the registered shooter is already a PGCA youth member, their membership will be extended for another year after their current expiration date.

Competition Venues:

Each youth participant can compete in one or all of the following events:
  • Trap – single or doubles –must shoot at least 250 targets total during the three month competition time frame;
  • Skeet – Modern or Classic - must shoot at least 250 targets total during the three month competition time frame;
  • 5-Stand - must shoot at least 250 targets total during the three month competition time frame; and
  • Sporting Clays - must shoot at least 500 targets total during the three month competition time frame.
If a competitor shoots more than the minimum targets (250, 250, 250, 500) – their HIGHEST scores will be used to count for the segment overall score.

If any shooter shoots any venue with a Side-by-Side (12 gauge MAXIMUM), or TRAP with a Classic American Single Barrel (Parker, Ithaca, L.C., etc) – their score will automatically be increased by 4 birds for each 25 rounds.

So, for example, if a young person shoots a 100 target sporting clays course with an Side-by-Side (SxS) and scores an 80 – their final adjusted total will be 96. Credits WILL also carry over into other sessions/events shot with a SxS.

Scoring. This is the honor system. Simply post up the shooters First name and LAST INITIAL ONLY – and the actual score, which event, the location it was shot, date, and the gauge & type of shotgun used. If shot with a SxS - I will "adjust" their score in the scorebook, so please post actual targets hit – so – for example –

Jane S. – 82 of 100 – Sporting Clays – Danvers MA – 6/10/12 - 20 GA Parker VHE
(I would enter it as a 98 into the scorebook, as there is a 4 bird per 25 bonus shot with a Parker).

Pictures would be a “BONUS”!!!

Prizes and Awards:
Each registered shooter who completes at least one event will receive
  • A PGCA Annual Membership;
  • In the event the registered shooter is already a PGCA Youth member, their membership will be extended for an additional year;
  • A Certificate of Completion for each event completed;
  • An embroidered or Pin “Merit Badge” which may be sewn or affixed to a hat, shooting vest, etc. A merit badge will be awarded for each event completed.
  • Individual “High Gun” awards will be awarded as such:
  • Achievement Award– Highest combined overall score shot with a Parker – all events; and
  • Top Gun – Highest combined overall score – all events;
  • High-Gun Trap– Highest Overall Score – Trap;
  • High-Gun Skeet– Highest Overall Score – Skeet;
  • High-Gun 5-Stand– Highest Overall Score – 5-Stand; and
  • High-Gun Sporting Clays – Highest Overall Score – Sporting Clays.
  • And lastly – and award will be given out for the Most Enthusiastic Youth Competitor for this “Heat of the Summer” series.

My Best to all,

John

May I suggest that we all print these rules and post them on the bulletin boards of the clubs we shoot at to encourage other shooters to get the young folks involved and to show what the PGCA is doing to support youth programs.

If I post this to my gun club, how do they communicate to the PGCA? Is there a special email address or must they all get a login on out forum?

Again - what a great idea. To facilitate your idea - click on the attachment in this post - print it out - and I'd suggest adding a contact phone or e-mail address to the printed version.

I'll probably catch some flak from someone for something about this - but honestly? I really don't give a darn... So, if you see a typo...??

Let the games begin,

John D.

John, can you add contact info to the bottom of the pdf to make it easier to register the shooters with the "central tabulation bureau" (probably you or Mary) and we can print the form and distribute it knowing the registration process will be streamlined?

Thanks, Dean
