The heart and the sunburst are a couple of the most common Remington era inspector's (?) marks. Russ's gun has an XH date code -- X = December H = 1939. My 16-gauge 1-frame has an XJ date code -- X = December J = 1940 (edited) -- and it has the heart and sunburst marks.
