Keavin there are several different sources for thin leather you can find online. This particular piece of pigskin I think I found on Etsy, and actually came from Italy. The most important part that will make the job much easier is start with a pice that is around .020" thick. This will make stretching it around the toe and heel of the pad without wrinkles much easier. Be patient and don't give up after your first attempt. Each one you do will get a little better.

Tandy has all the weights, from 1-2oz to 10-12oz. Pigskin, calveskin, cowhide and from 1/4 shoulder to full hides.

Hobby Lobby also carries smaller pieces in very thin thicknesses appropriate for use in doing leather covered pads. They don't carry the size and thickness varieties like Tandy or Weaver, but have a nice selection of pre-dyed sizes.
