I finally worked up the nerve to take the locks off and have a look.
It appears that the original stock is repairable, which is good news for me, as money is tight, as well as (at 70 years of age) time left on earth.
The deciding factor was the condition of the wood between the action plates.
I have a friend who is a retired gunsmith, Toby Leeds, who has been quite a help in this time of need.
