Hot bluing probably seeped in between the barrels & bottom rib causing rust to seep out & holes drilled to put in oil to stop rusting action.

My copy of Price & Fjestad notes the original length of the barrels to be: 30 inches. Page 323

Also, that this was manufactured in 1901. Page 57
