Tim I usually cock them on a small block of wood by pushing down on it, and yes, do wear a glove. I've slipped and knuckled the rear part of the forend. I've also put the barrels on in the open position, and with your third hand put the forend in place and close the barrels. Usually snaps on and clocks the electors at the same time. I do it on my Smiths.
