I've posted this before. I live five minutes from the ORIGINAL Dicks Sporting goods in Binghamton, where it all started. The gun counter is relegated to the back and by the charter when it went public, that store can't ever be closed. My father knew Dick Stack, a highly respected man, but I can't say anything terribly nice about the family now. They have an agenda, and it isn't good for our sport. We can see where their money goes up in these parts and it's surely not to protect our interests.

I patronized Dick's original Binghamton store from 1975 when I met my wife until they went "humanitarian", so to speak, about 2 years ago. I still buy my license each October at their Vestal Mall store for grouse hunting with my wife's extended family friends and relatives. I bought and read the recently published history of Dick Stack's life and business career with great interest. I view it as a very sobering chronicle of the demise of the small business / full service ethic of local sporting goods businesses in America and the ascent of the "whatever" ethic of the Big Box stores to which they all seem to inevitably succumb.

Simply research the charities they donate to and the candidates they contribute to.

Cabelas did have a policy of not letting you handle/inspect guns until you bought them after the Bass Pro take over. Friends of mine that worked in the Gun Room at the Wheeling, Wv store were embarassed when they had to tell me this. The policy has since been changed, at least here, and you can now ask to inspect and handle the guns.
They would have really low balled you on that gun anyway. Better to sell it here.

Speaking of Dicks.
Here is a head scratcher. Locally we have 3 Dicks stores. Two of them have removed all things firearms and ammunition related as Kevin mentioned above. But the one store still has everything. Long guns, hand guns, whatever. I dont get it.???

I refuse to shop at Dick's. In addition to the reasons above, they are overpriced.

They're like all typical hypocrites. Dicks WILL sell ammo and firearms if the local market has nobody to fill the void and if they didn't open a Field and Stream nearby. The same reason they jacked ammo prices up on older stock as soon as the run started two years ago. They WILL, by God, profit from you in turbulent times while also banging on their bully pulpit.
