In the Winchester 2 7/8 black powder blanks they load them with 8 drams of BP. Other 2 7/8 blanks or signal loads I have seen are also loaded with 8 drams of BP .

I'm not a BP user except in a couple original ML's .

I do however load 36.5 grains of Universal Clays with 1 3/4 ounces of shot in m 8 gauge loads . I also have no issue with the 1 1/2 ounce load pushed by 31 grains of Clays . It's just easier for me atleast to do the 1 3/4 ounce load then I need not worry with card spacers in the shotcup .

I think the 1 3/4oz loads I have are 46gr of bluedot. The 8 gauge can actually be pretty versatile with its payload. I have seen loads from 1.5oz up to 3oz. Even if I had a gun proofed for the 3oz loads I wouldnt want to shoot those in a 12-15lb gun. I shot a 3oz 10 ga load before and it felt like being in a car wreck from a 11lb single I said never again lol.

the 1 3/4 ounce load is probly the best all around load in the 8 ga...I too have shot 3 ounce loads in the 8 and 10 ga. in the 10 ga the patterns were not that good out of a full choke Ithaca mag 10...in the 8 ga pattern were fair but a 2 1/2 ounce load the patterns was really good a turkey would not stand a chance...I have some factory Winchester loads with 2 ounce of shot and 7 drams of black powder that probably was a super stout load...that is the heaviest old factory loading I ve run across....charlie

I have been shooting 1 5/8 loads in the big 10 and thought I would try a 1 3/4 load but it was more then I wanted.

I also got terrible patterns with the 3oz 10 ga loads, they were made by nitro ammo. Didnt matter which choke I tried either , I think 3oz is just to much shot for a 10 ga . The best heavy lead loads or well the ones that patterned best for me were the Winchester HV turkey loads . In 10 and 12 ga 3.5" they are/were 2oz at 1300fps .
My 8ga is 14lbs and it barely moves when shooting the 1 3/4oz loads.

I would love to see how the 8 ga patterns larger shot sizes like #2s BB T shot etc .

I used to feed every kind of load you can think of out of my BPS 10 ga . It actually patterned T shot pretty evenly at 40 yards with a light mod choke .

Im still trying to decide what I want to load in the 8 ga shot size wise.

My 10 loads are pretty much all 1 1/4 ounces with SR7625 or 1 1/8 with Red Dot . I did load a few 1 1/2 with SR7625 but a very few . 10 gauge with 1 1/4 ounce is plenty for me .
