Milton the dark spots are were the finish is worn down to the bare wood and most likely the owner rubbed in linseed oil which has darkened with time. But it does add character in my opinion.
I agree , I think it brings a nice contrast to the other features overall . Looks to have actually been fielded as a proper big bore fowling piece .
