I hope you don’t think your being nitpicky. These questions lead to information and it’s refreshing, at least to me. I too have chased “fit”. And I have like you, walked away from several because I didn’t know where they would shoot for me. And some I thought were dead nuts right there didn’t shoot where I hoped they would. I agree with much of what has been written above, in that if you shoot a gun enough you will find yourself adjusting.
Your the only one that can know what suits you best. I found out eventually, that I much prefer to float the bird, but with some guns that are lower at the face and heel, I must cover the bird up to do any good. I can make that work for awhile, but when I shoot clays it shows up latter in the round and I drop birds I shouldn’t.
Although I shot side by side guns as a youth, I went about 15 years of successfully shooting O/U guns that were stocked higher and shot at least 60/40 patterns and that lead to what I want to see. I exclusively shoot side by sides now maybe poorly, but it’s what I enjoy.
I wish it were just the stock measurements, because if it was, it would be simple.
If you need any excuses for missing I have those down to where I don’t need to practice in a mirror, wish it wasn’t so with my gun mount.
