The double single is an inertia trigger. If dry firing then pull the front trigger and then hit the butt with your hand forcefully or lightly bounce the butt on the floor. This will set the trigger for the second barrel. You might find that you do in fact have a double single.
Good post, Patrick. Live firing is more fun and less likely to break the stock. Say "HI" to "Long Range" and try to get him to post some good hunting stories.
