I once knew a nuclear physicist who worked high up in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission safeguarding how things were done. It was incredibly stressful for him and he hated his job.

I once asked him why he was still there - why he didn't resign... He told me "Because I don't think I can trust anyone else to act as responsibly in doing this as I do."
