Default First hunt with my NH short 10 ga.

Went goose hunting this morning for the first time since about 1970. I took my 1892 NH 32in 10ga parker that I had only shot one time before at sporting clays. I loaded some ITX BB's in new Cheddite hulls, 1 1/4 oz at 1150 fps. Me and my 2 friends had just set down in the blind when a flock of about 25 came right into our decoy set up. Both friends were shooting 3 1/2 in 12ga auto loaders with Black Cloud shot, one shot 3 times, no bird, the other shot 3 times, 1 bird, I shot twice, 2 birds. We had barely picked up the birds when another flock of 40 or 50 came in, 2 of us shot once and the other shot twice. 3 More birds down which was the limit. Picked up the decoys and out of the field by 8:15am. Very nice morning even though the rain was pretty heavy. It was my first time with no-tox shot but it sure did the job. 3 birds with 3 shots at about 50 yards, what's not to like. Ready to go again. Carvel

Would you be kind enough to supply your load data? Always looking for good information. Pressure? Sounds like a good working load and am in need of no-tox data for my guns. Nice to see the old ones back doing what they were built to do.

Eric, these were Cheditte hulls and primers cut to 2 7/8, 34gr of 4756, PT1044 wad with one wrap of heavy mylar wrap in the shot cup, 1 1/4 oz of ITX BB,s (80 pellets I counted them for every shell, over shot card with a roll crimp sealed with duco cement to keep out moisture. I have not had them tested, but by comparison to the bismuth data and talking to people at Balistic Products, it should be around 5000 psi. and about 1150 fps. They seem mild with low recoil when you shoot them. I am not one to do much experimenting with loads since there are so many variables which can be dangerous. You decide for yourself. Hope this helps. Carvel

Thank you! That sounds like a very workable load.

Congrats! Take my word for it, eventually SR 4756 will let you down and it will happen at the worst possible time and cost you a bird be it fowl or turkey. It has the greatest tendency to produce squib loads in the Short Ten of any powder going, then or now. Additionally a 5000 psi loading is going to produce squibs in winter weather with almost 100% certainty.

I shot the last of my 4756 in 12ga loadings without issue but in the 10ga it is a heartbreaker. I know of three other Short Ten shooters that had SR4756 let them down at a very bad time.

Pete - have you had any issue in warmer weather with the 4756?

With the 7625 supplies dwindling, since I have a modest stock of 4756, I was wondering about summer clay loads with that and saving the 7625 for hunting loads

Been awhile as I used 4756 early on loading the Short Ten, it quickly became a highly distrusted powder. 7625 was much better. I would shoot up the 4756 any place where it doesn't count, I would avoid where score matters and birds are involved.

Since you only shoot a few shells when goose hunting, I make sure the shells are stored in a warm place and keep the extras in my inside pocket. Thus far, no problems. What would you use for a low pressure 1 1/4 oz load? Thanks Carvel

This is what I shoot. 38 to 39 grains of bluedot, any hull, fed 209A primer ,sp10 wad and 1 1/4 oz of bismuth shot. with a fold crimp. That took care of all my "bloopers" and I have had my share of them with the 4756; Good luck
