That is more my thinking since the engraving on the rib all looks re-cut.
I see no evidence of the rest of the "D" it much have been pretty wiped out.
I wish I coukd share with you who the maker is, but i do not know. It is simply marked "Superior Lamascus (Damascus) Steel" on the rib annd only "Field" on each lock plate. It is a very nicely fitted and finished gun though. Great engraving.
