Jason,

It all seems pretty simple to me. Though the photos aren't that good and I am not familiar with the maker of the gun I can say if he cuts the barrels he will probably take a decent gun worth maybe $500.00 and magically turn it into a gun worth $200.00. It is as simple as that. He would be much better of by going to a Walmart to buy a Remington 870 which they sell often as a loss leader for under $300.00. He would have little invested in it and would have a home protection gun far better for that purpose than the double barrel you displayed. Possibly the double is worth 5 times as much as I am guessing because I am not personally familiar with the manufacturer.

What I'm trying to do is find a way to offer him something in exchange so he can do what he wants. In the form of cash or a trade. I just don't know what kind of value I'm dealing with. He bought it for $175 at an auction. He's a friend so I want to be moderately fair about it.
