I agree that engraving a complete rib would be in no way cost effective. But spot repairs, like knicks and dents, would be best done by an engraver without too much trouble. At least I would think.
When I spoke with Turnbull a few years ago about the roll stamping, I was inquiring about a Parker that had the all too often seen holes drilled and tapped through the makers mark from iron sights. They said they could fill the holes, wipe out the makers mark and re roll it on for a ballpark price of $500. That is if I remember correctly.
Personally, if the matting was completely wiped out on a barrel, instead of engraving it, I would be looking at putting a replacement rib on.
