Default Stock shield

i have a Remington VH double trap that is missing the stock shield. i looked for one on our forums & was immediately given one by another member , Chris Travinski , who wouldn't even let me pay him for it( Thanks Chris ).
but anyway back to my question...after further inspection, i found a wood screw in the middle of the recessed shield area ? it looks as though there is a piece of solder on one edge of the head. the shield i got from Chris came with two small brads to attach it with. did Remington use a different method for attaching shields & if so, how did they solder under the shield ?
i have filed off the solder , reinstalled screw to fill void and used the brads.
