I agree everyone else, especially Brian. It's a shooter, don't change what it is. You'll end up regretting it. I've had this 1904 vintage 20 for quite a while. It was bought new and stayed in the same family for 3 generations. Too long of story and history to go into, but I wouldn't want this any other way. She's nothing pretty, but she's quite the little shooter! I shoot this better than my "pretty ones". Don't strip your new shooter of all the stories it could tell you of it's days spent in the field.

Suggestions for a pad. Yeah, a pad that doesn't require you to carve a piece off the back of the stock.

It ought to be a great gun for doves, Bruce ......... and quail as you described. And you can always open those chokes the easy, non-invasive way with spreaders. They would likely make it into a SK/M choked gun, but patterning would tell for sure.

There are several pads that would look good on it, and give you more LOP, without harming the original dimensions of the wood. I like the period style pads, Hawkins, Jostam, Silvers, etc.

I'm getting a little anxious about my 32" DHE getting back to me for the mid and late upcoming dove seasons. It's off having the triggers tuned and has been gone, along with my Elsie 32" 16 ga., for several months with no word. I don't really expect to hear anything until they're done, but I sure want to see Jim Kelly's name pop up on my cell phone screen!

Hope you enjoy it!

Stan: I was thinking a "thin" Silvers, or Silvers type pad.

Bruce, Mark's Born Again Bird Guns sold a "Silvers type" pad that I am using on my AE Fox 30" barreled 16 ga. It has small screw-hole plugs which, IMHO, look much better on a small bore doublegun than the original type Silvers pads with their huge screw hole plugs. It is gently contoured on the face, moreso than a Silvers.

I can't pull up a link to the pads themselves, but a call to Mark would reveal whether or not they're still available. I may be too picky, but with my guns I can be that way. And, I just hate the way a recoil pad with overly large hole plugs looks on a small bore gun. Griffin & Howe also used to have a Silvers type pad with small plugs, but they're no longer available. I'd love to find a few for sale.

This is what it looks like:

I also use slip on pads to lengthen some guns' LOP, when there is a recoil pad already on the gun but not long enough for me (34" sleeves). But, I use the leather Kick Killer brand of pads. They add 1/2" and can be removed easily, but I do hate covering up pretty wood in the back end of a buttstock, even for a few hours. They do work, though!
