The heart and the sunburst are a couple of the most common Remington era inspector's (?) marks. Russ's gun has an XH date code -- X = December H = 1939. My 16-gauge 1-frame has an XJ date code -- X = December J = 1941 -- and it has the heart and sunburst marks.

So Dave, on the two date codes you cited, are those the respective production dates, or dates of return to Remington for service or whatever?
