i would think attempting an inch of movement will risk breaking the wood, and even if you didn't, the odds are much of that will slowly go back to its old position.

some members here recommended these to replace a taped on home made pad

i like them- and have them on my dog leg stocks- for the really low ones I use double stick tape to keep a strip or two of thick leather under them

and they come off with any damage to an old finish
