every now and then on the internet, and the few boards i actively participate on - I get reminded of a story I was told when I was young, I have unfortunately forgotten the wise source. - little long winded - so skip it if you don't like parables.

it goes like this

two roads converged into one before entering a small village, at this junction there was a large rock and on this rock sat an old man.

down one road came a stranger, a scowl on his face and a stomp in his walk. He stopped in front of the old man and gruffly asked "what are the people like in the village ahead?"

"what were the people like in the village you come from?" said the old man

the stranger replied "they did not get along, were always looking for a fight"

the old man shook his head and said "I am afraid you will find people to be just like that in the next town"

and off stomped the stranger

a short while later another man came down the other road with a smile on his face, a light step, watching the birds in the trees.

He stopped in front of the old man, greeted him politely and asked "what are the people like in the village ahead?"

"what were the people like in the village you come from?" said the old man

the stranger said "they where mostly friendly and tried to get along with their neighbors well"

the old man smiled and nodded his head and said "I think you will find people to be just like that in the next town"

internet auction sites like gunbroker offer a reserve option, that allows sellers to list items for sale with a low published opening bid and a high hidden reserve amount. an advantage of this approach to selling is that you can determine the true market value of an item and then decide on a competitive selling price later.
