Mr. Staton,
My name is Keith Hackleman, I am Kirk Merrington's apprentice.
To reiterate what the previous members wrote and you as well, yes, you should keep the lugs, bites and flats cleaned and greased. Also, keep your barrels clean and lightly oiled.
We recommend having your guns stripped and cleaned every 2-5 years, depending on your region. For example, down here in Texas we have lots of sand and dust so we like to do a complete strip and clean every 2 years.
A strip and clean consists of disassembling the entire gun. Once disassembled, individually clean and inspect each part, re greasing and completing a function and safety check. If you have any questions feel free to contact me or Kirk.
