The 2 1/2", 1/2 ounce, loads are mandated for registered targets in skeet and sporting clays. I have killed many doves with them also, but prefer 3" loads for game birds. The old WW 3/4 ounce load is a super good patterning, and killing, load for me. I have some .410 doubles that are not regulated with any lighter load than this.

Having done a lot of shotgun patterning in my life with doubleguns I have found that the lighter the gun the more critical it is that the shooter find the load it likes the best, and that will shoot both barrels to point of aim. .410s can be very finicky because of their, usually, very light weight.
