I dont know what to think.
I just bought a Parker 16 gauge serial number 240825 a 1937 gun. It is the first Parker Gun Works I have owned. Research shows it to be one of two consecutive number 26 inches with no extras VH guns made. The last two unless I missed something. However, I was not expecting to see Parker Brothers all over it, top rib, stamped on water table, grip cap and butt plate. Parker only on the bottom of the receiver with Parker Gun Works stamped on the barrel flat. Looks like they were still using the Parker Brothers name right up until the end. Don't remember seeing one with Parker Brothers stamped on the water table. It has some really great looking wood that I would have expected on a GH.

The lowest serial number I've recorded with the ILION, N.Y. on the watertable and no rib legend is 241182 --
Attachment 138335 Attachment 138336 As far as I've found they only produced the late PARKER ILION, N.Y. grip cap in the size for 1-frame and larger stocks -- Attachment 138337 and they only begin appearing about 500 guns later. The PARKER BROS. MERIDEN, CONN. grip caps appear on the 0-frame and smaller to the end. |
Thanks Dave, so they never really made it out of the transition phase?

Yup, even though the Parker operation moved to Ilion in 1937.

It's not uncommon to see nice wood on a Remington Parker VH.

It sure makes the little gun speak to me. I may not have bought it if it had the usual straight grain.

To Researcher -
These pictures are of my grandson Cam’s VH 20 on a 0-frame. Don’t know if we can include it as any sort of evidence because it went back prior to the 70’s for a new buttstock and complete restoration so I’m not saying anything to contest your information and I don’t know if the grip cap is of the 0-frame size or the 1-frame size. The cap measures 1 5/16” wide and 1 11/16” long. Remington repair or service code is RJ3. |
