Interesting D Hammer gun for sale

I saw this listing this morning and thought it interesting, haven't seen many two barrel sets of a hammer top lever gun.

That’s a really nice Parker that looks correct in every detail except two. The first being if Parker had replaced the second forend iron they would most certainly have numbered it to the gun.
Second, overboring was common in the day but at far as I know, only up to about .750”. .765” throws up a big red flag for me.

This one displays 3 different serial numbers. Interesting or strange in that the serialization book shows it as having an extra set of barrels but the ones with the gun have different serial numbers than the frame, both of them.

Hmmm…

The buttplate is a real curiosity. It looks like solid horn. And properly fitted. One would expect a SSBP on the gun. I wonder if records may suggest a request for a horn plate. But if a buttplate was requested, one would also expect a DHBP.

Randy, the numbers on the bottom of the barrels are not the serial numbers. This deceptive and overpriced vendor does not display the serial numbers on the barrel lugs. True, the second forearm is missing, but oh well. I can't understand why he doesn't order PGCA letters on his more unusual guns. I inquired about a gun several years ago, and about one of its unusual features, inquiring about the feature on the PGCA letter. He stated he had no letter on the gun. I was ready to write the check, but only if the feature was found original and the original buyer could be identified. Four or six years later, the gun is still on his list and he has not ordered the letter. We can't order a letter on every gun we are somewhat interested in. However, as the seller of a mid to high four figure gun, I would order the letter so a potential buyer could make a more informed decision. I gave up on this seller years ago and only became interested in this Grade 3 hammer gun because I didn't realize he was the seller.

Bill when I went back and looked again after your post I did see the correct serial numbers on the barrel lugs. Having said that what is the 17555 number on each barrel flat ?

Dean Romig 08-27-2021 04:14 PM

The number stamped on the barrel flats of earlier hammer guns is the order number, not the serial number.

So if they have the same order number, it must have been produced as a set???

Bill, I am with you on this vendor, and wonder if he ever actually sells any of the guns listed, uniformly all over priced? But he does present some unique pieces.
